My friend, Amber and I were both pregnant with girls at the same time. Shortly before Amber’s due date…it was determined that something was wrong and she needed to deliver immediately. At six months of age, Willow was diagnosed with Gaucher’s disease. Amber was informed that her daughter was born with a rare, genetic disease and probably wouldn’t live past the age of 2. Willow was such a special baby - there was something amazing about just being in her presence. She spent many days in hospitals and at St. Jude and smiled through it all. Willow was here for exactly one year…she went to heaven on her 1st birthday. Willow’s fundraiser typically runs from July 15th - July 30th each summer, with the giveaway taking place on July 31st. This year we are celebrating Willow in August…she would have been 16 this month 💗

When my daughter was a baby, I taught in the Pre-K class at her school. I had the most precious group of children that year…among them, was a fun and silly blue-eyed boy named Levi. A couple of short years later, he left the earth at the very young age of 7. The following year, Marathon for Memories (a local marathon), was done in his memory. A group of us from the preschool had a team and ran in Levi’s memory that year and for several consecutive years. A few years ago I decided I would branch out and do an art fundraiser for St. Jude in Levi’s memory. This picture is from when Levi was in my class, and we were outside enjoying the visiting petting zoo…he is loving on a baby goat in this photo.

A R T for S T. J U D E
I have worked with children in some form or fashion since I was a teenager. Growing up I always heard ads and announcements about fundraisers for St. Jude Children’s hospital. When my art became a serious focus in my life, I knew that I wanted my work to make a difference some way, somehow. So, when deciding how I would use my art to do that…St. Jude just seemed like a natural option.
St. Jude is a children’s hospital located in Memphis, Tennessee…just an hour down the road from where I live. Families that have a child receiving treatment at St. Jude never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food. It is a research hospital and shares the discoveries it makes. That means doctors and scientists around the world can use their findings to help thousands more children. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped change the childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to 80%.
My other reason for choosing St. Jude is to remember two precious young souls that I had the privilege of knowing during their time on Earth. Levi was a student of mine. Willow was a friend’s daughter. You can see their pictures and read more near the top of this page.
I hope you will consider joining me in this cause. You can be involved in these fundraisers by following Samantha Wood Art on Instagram or Facebook. You can also check my website at the first of July and the first of November to see the paintings and participate.
